PRESS RELEASE:
03.06.2010
Travellers’ private imports of alcohol and tobacco remain fairly stable
Travellers’ private imports
of alcohol totalled 15.2 million litres in the January–April period, which is
the same as in the corresponding period of 2009. The trend in import volumes
varied by beverage category. Imports of beer and cider declined, while imports
of long drinks increased by more than a half. All in all, imports of brewery
beverages rose slightly during early 2010. Imports of unfortified and fortified
wines remained stable, but imports of strong alcoholic drinks fell. These
statistics are taken from TNS Gallup’s survey on travellers’ private imports of
alcohol.
When translated into pure
alcohol, travellers’ private imports were about 6 per cent lower than in the
corresponding period of 2009. In terms of pure alcohol, imports of strong
alcoholic drinks accounted for 54 per cent, wines 13 per cent, beer 13 per
cent, long drinks 10 per cent, fortified wines 6 per cent and cider 4 per cent
of total imports. The monitoring period for 2010 was one week shorter than the
corresponding period of 2009. When this is taken into account, travellers’
private imports during early 2010 can be considered to have remained at the
same level as last year.
Since the spring of 2007,
1,000 people have been surveyed with regard to their purchases of alcoholic
beverages over the Internet during the past year. In 2010, purchases remained
at the same level as in 2009, with the exception of beer and fortified wines,
whose purchases rose. When translated into pure alcohol, the total volume of
alcoholic beverages purchased over the Internet was about one per cent of total
consumption. However, the margin of error is great, as very few respondents
reported having bought alcohol over the Internet. In the future, Internet
purchases will be surveyed more frequently in order to obtain more reliable
results.
According to data collected
by TNS Gallup, travellers imported about 203 million cigarettes during the first
third of 2010. Although imports fell by 18 per cent on 2009, they remained at
the same level as in 2006–2008. Data on the import of snuff has also been
gathered since the beginning of 2009. During the January–April period of 2010,
travellers stated that they imported about 2.5 million boxes of snuff, which represents
a 40 per cent rise on the corresponding period of last year.
