PRESS RELEASE: 02.06.2010

Summer jobs at breweries are in high demand

This spring, member companies of the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry received a total of almost 9300 summer job applications. The number of applicants has risen year by year and they come from a very wide range of educational backgrounds.

The brewing industry offers many and varied summer jobs for those over the age of 18 all over Finland. In the summer, the industry needs assistants in production, logistics and office work. Most summer employees go into production and logistics to learn the skills required in the industry. Summer jobs are also available in laboratories, customer service, sales and administration. Hartwall, Nokian Panimo, Olvi and Sinebrychoff hire a total of about 500 summer employees, either as substitutes or additional workers.

“Breweries run on three shifts during the entire summer season. Summer employees play an important role. They enable the brewing industry to keep up with the demands of the hottest season of the year and ensure that we can supply enough summer drinks to consumers,” says Tero Kallio, Managing Director of the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry.

Many employees in the brewing industry started out in a summer job and became seasoned brewery professionals over the years. A summer employee may sometimes be given a permanent position if he or she has the necessary educational qualifications. In addition, breweries offer opportunities for self-development through further training and learning on the job.

“A summer job gives many young people their first encounter with real working life. By serving in a variety of capacities at breweries, young people gain important knowledge and experience of working life. For breweries, summer employees represent an investment in the future. A summer job can inspire a young person to enter the industry. Summer employees can turn into skilled professionals who contribute to the development of the industry,” says Kallio, who himself once was a summer employee at a brewery.
