Domestic sales by members of the Finnish Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry 1 January - 30 September 2008
Beverage sales continue to fall, long drinks now as popular as cider
According to the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry’s statistics, a total of 620.6 million litres of beer, cider, long drinks, soft drinks and mineral waters had been sold by the end of September. Beverage sales were down by 3.4 per cent on last year. Beer sales fell by 10.6 million litres, or 3.3 per cent. Only sales of long drinks rose.
According to the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry’s statistics for the third quarter, 21.8 million litres less beer, cider, long drinks, soft drinks and mineral waters had been sold by the end of September than in the corresponding period of 2007. A total of 620.6 million litres of brewery beverages were sold in the January–September period, representing a fall of 3.3 per cent.
By the end of September, sales of alcoholic drinks had fallen by a total of 2.9 per cent and non-alcoholic drinks by 4.1 per cent. The greatest decline in terms of litres was seen in beer sales. A total of 308.5 million litres of beer was sold, which is 10.6 million litres (3.3%) less than in the corresponding period of last year.
Cider sales fell to 28.8 million litres (-8.2%), while long drink sales rose to 28.4 million litres (+9.7%). This is the first time that long drink sales have reached the same level as cider sales.
A total of 204.3 million litres of soft drinks were sold in the January-September period, which is 7.3 million litres less than last year. Mineral water sales totalled 50.5 million litres. Water sales fell by 3.8 million litres.
