AFTER EIGHTEEN awards presented for best plans to prevent underage drinking

The Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry and the Youth Academy presented AFTER EIGHTEEN awards to six junior high schools this year. Schools and pupils were encouraged to prepare action plans aimed at preventing underage drinking. The schools presenting the two best plans received €1,000 prizes plus a supply of soft drinks.

AFTER EIGHTEEN awards were presented for the second time this year. The Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry has cooperated with the Youth Academy to prevent underage drinking since 2000 by supporting the Youth Academy's MAHIS, TUTOR and NOTE activities. Last year AFTER EIGHTEEN prizes went to projects which were conducted by young people in danger of marginalization. This time the awards were aimed at normal young people in junior high schools, with the goal being to encourage schools and young people to work together on projects to prevent underage drinking. Six plans received awards in all.

Iittala School and Hannu Krankka School in Liminka won the top prize of €1,000 with their plans. They also received a supply of soft drinks. Oulunsalo Comprehensive School and Hakalahti School in Kokkola won prizes of €800 while Oulu Normal School and Linnapelto School in Kuopio won prizes of €700.

Applications were received from all over Finland. Plans had to include concrete, action-oriented projects to reduce underage drinking. Emphasis was placed on getting young people involved in planning and implementing activities. Taking advantage of outside organizations was also considered important.

The AFTER EIGHTEEN awards support breweries' objective of promoting responsible alcohol consumption. The Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry wants to encourage young people to participate in alcohol-free activities.

The projects which received AFTER EIGHTEEN awards will be presented this autumn on the Youth Academy's website at http://www.nuortenakatemia.fi/
